Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. is the capital of the U.S.A. The D.C. stands for District of Columbia, which is different from the State of Washington, which is at the other (north-west) end of the United States. Washington D.C. is a district and is not part of any state. It is situated on the border between Maryland and Virginia, which was chosen as a neutral "middle" between the Northern and Southern states at the end of the civil war.
Unfortunately, during our visit, there was a lot of construction going on in the White House and Mall area. A security officer stressed (as a child that denies having done anything wrong even before you have accused him) that these were not security measures, but just planned improvements of the area... Anyway, let's hope for future visitors these constructions are completed soon, because they do take away a lot of the beauty of the area.
