Pennsylvania

From NY State we drove south via Philadelphia (which we did not visit) to the Pennsylvania Dutch country. On the way we stopped at the beautiful Longwood gardens.

The Pennsylvania Dutch country is an area where many Amesh live. Their simple and devoted lifestyle is clearly illustrated in the movie "Witness". The Amesh are not Dutch, but Swiss immigrants; the "Dutch" comes from Switzerdeutch. Less known is that the area also hosts many Mennonites, who have a similar devoted lifestyle, but most of them less strict in the avoidance of modern technology.
We did not take many pictures, because most of the Amesh (understandably) do not like to be photographed.

Pierre du Pont (1870-1954), chairman of the DuPont and General Motors companies, bought a park in 1906 to preserve the trees from being cut for timber. He designed and developed the area himself and left the gardens after his death "for the sole use of the public ...". The Longwood Gardens is a beautiful park with tree lined paths, ponds, fountains and many, many different flowers.
